LIFE
AFTER HIGH SCHOOL FOR VERNAL T. SORENSEN
I was born in Burley, Idaho September, 14, 1932.
I graduated from the Idaho Falls, Idaho High
school and participated in music with the
marching band and directed the Pep Band when I
was a senior. I joined the
116th Engineer
Combat Battalion and ended up in Korea when I
was 18 years old.
I
married Donna Jayne Lewis from Rigby, Idaho in
1954 and did my pre dental studies at the Univ.
of Utah. After 2 years and 2 quarters there, I
was accepted to Marquette University Dental
School. My first son was born there in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I graduated ninth in my
class of 133 and was selected to the Honorary
Dental Fraternity. I established a practice in
General Dentistry in Gresham, Oregon just 12
miles east of Portland and practiced there for
37 years and retired in June of 1996 to St.
George, Utah. During the time in Gresham, my
wife Donna gave birth to our second son and
later we adopted a 2 ½ day old little blonde
girl. During all this time, I sang with several
choral groups, male quartets, and a mixed
quartet. One of the choral groups gave us the
opportunity to sing for the troops in Hawaii and
to make several trips which included Australia,
South America, Africa, The Holy Land, Greece and
Hungary (behind the Iron Curtain). I am
currently singing in a mixed quartet here in St.
George.
We
currently have 11 grandchildren and 5 great
grand children. Our daughter gave birth to twins
and our oldest granddaughter gave birth to
triplets. This only seems appropriate as my wife
Donna’s Mother had three sets of twins. Most of
my family live in Oregon, Arizona and Utah. We
are proud of them.
My
wife and I retired to St. George to serve our
first mission for the LDS Church. Our second
mission was to Palmyra N.Y. at the historical
sites and Visitors Center. Our third we served
in a Substance Abuse Recovery Mission here in
St. George. We are just now finishing our 4th mission
and I am one of four Bishops serving the poor
and needy in the Transient Bishops office here
in St. George. We service the needs of 24 Stakes
and their Bishops. I have had the opportunity to
serve as a Bishop 3 times. I served as a regular
Ward Bishop and once as a Young Single Adult
Bishop and now with my present calling,
I
have tried to be engaged in regular exercising
and through the years have gone to spas, run a
few miles every day and currently ride my bike
about 12 miles a day. I had a heart attack Feb.
28, 2004 while riding my bike and had the same
damage to my heart as my Dad had while the 116th was
in Korea. I held off 19 years longer than he
did. I had a stint placed which was not
available when he had his. I feel fine and am
still riding my bike. We are grateful for both
of us to be alive and if we can make it to the
reunion we hope we will recognize some of you
after these many years.
