After graduating from Idaho Falls High
School, I went to the University of Idaho
School of Business to get a B.S. in
Accounting. I pledged Alpha Tau Omega
Fraternity and was President of the Inter
fraternity Council. To help finance my
college education, I worked on my father's
farms south of Roberts & also rented about
from 800 to 1,500 acres of dry farm ground
to raise wheat.
While at college, I worked in the Kappa
Kappa Gamma sorority house serving meals &
washing dishes and met a nice cute blond by
the name of Nancy Jutila from Mullan,
Idaho. She was also an Accounting major and
we frequently got to sit by each other We
were married on August 29, 1954 & will soon
celebrate our 56th anniversary.
After graduating from the U. of I. and
getting married, I spent 2 years in the
Army Military Police Corps in Colorado
Springs, Colorado where, appropriately, our
first address was 119 Lover's Lane! From
there we moved to Denver, Colorado where I
enrolled in the University of Denver
graduate school, obtained an M.B.A. in
accounting and also passed the CPA
examination (on the first attempt) in
December 1957.
I was very fortunate to have been offered a
job with a CPA in Idaho Falls because that
is where we eventually wanted to live
anyway. In 1976, I founded my own firm of
O'Brien, Tomchak & Co. at 432 Shoup Avenue.
I held offices in several CPA & tax
organizations during the 41 years that I was
in practice and in 1998 retired completely.
Now we spend the winter 6 months in our home
in Lake Havasu City, AZ & the summer 6
months between our Idaho Falls town home &
cabin on Island Park Reservoir.
Our main hobbies have been traveling in 46
countries, all 50 states (motor homing in 49
states, Mexico & Canada), bridge & card
playing, dancing (square, round &
ballroom). We have 2 married sons (one is a
professor of cardiology at the U. of
Washington in Seattle & one is a nuclear
engineer-manager at the INL), 4
granddaughters, and one grandson (graduated
from good old IF High School June 2, 2010).
We are still too young to have any Great
Grandchildren!
